LG lets loose pics, release date for internal Blu-ray / HD DVD drive

March 13th, 2007 · No Comments

We’ve known that LG has had an internal Blu ray burner / HD DVD player combo drive in the works for some time now, but the company has just now let loose the first pics of the format-agnostic device, as well as presumably final release date, in anticipation of its official unveiling at CeBIT. Of course, being an internal drive, there isn’t a heckuva lot to see, but those side by side logos should be more than enough to impress anyone looking closely enough. Equally impressive is the price, with the drive, dubbed the GGW-H10N “Super Multi Blue,” set to demand a hefty $1,200 when it rolls out in May. While the release date’s been changed slightly, the drives specs don’t appear to have been, with the same 4x recording speed for Blu ray discs, and write speeds between 6x and 10x for the usual line-up of DVD formats.

PSP2 probably is or isn’t coming — maybe

March 13th, 2007 · No Comments

Almost since its inception the PSP has been subject of relentless redesign rumors — and why not? By most portable gaming device standards it’s positively ginormous. Blame it on the UMD, that beautifully massive 4.3-inch screen, or its lack of internal memory, but a thinner, trimmed down PSP is just what the doctor ordered. And while Sony has repeatedly (and expectedly) denied the prospect of an overhaul, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire recently stated that a “smaller, lighter” PSP was in the wings; of course, that was immediately rebuked by an SCE UK statement that “There are no immediate changes planned for PSP.” Look, the PSP isn’t going to be like this forever — either they introduce a new model, or they redesign the current one, but pretending like neither is happening is just silly. We’re on to your little game, Sony!

Binatone announces first CAT-iq compliant phone

March 13th, 2007 · No Comments

Filed under:

The recently-announced CAT-iq standard doesn’t exactly have the greatest name recognition just yet, but Hong Kong-based Binatone looks to be doing its part to help get it off the ground, announcing its first CAT-iq compliant phone at CeBIT. CAT-iq, for those not up to speed, is a new standard for VoIP cordless phones developed by the DECT Forum, which promises to deliver “high definition” sound quality in addition to an array of Internet-based services. Binatone’s phone looks to bring all those newly-standardized options into the conference room, with a cordless handset complimented by a wireless, full-duplex speakerphone. When not chatting it up, you’ll also be able to use the handset to check news, stocks, weather, and other information, as well as listen to Internet radio stations with “stunning sound quality.” Unfortunately, there’s no word on what it’ll cost, although it looks like it’ll be available sometime in the third quarter of this year.
