Zenum Opus Operis – Say that again?

March 13th, 2007 · No Comments

What a name. What a stylish looking device. Just looking at the photo, it seems a tad wide, but I have to admit that it immediately got me excited. I agree with Chris at Engadget, hopefully they will release with Windows Mobile 6. It says Spring 2007. That’s a few days away on my calendar.

Zenum’s site has been reborn recently, though, suggesting that the company is still on track to eventually offer the QWERTY device, this time with a spring ‘07 launch. Though the site shows Windows Mobile 5 as the platform of choice, we trust Zenum will have the wisdom to switch over to 6 by the time the Opus gets out the door. Other specs should include 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, 2 megapixel cam, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 1.2, and a tri-band GSM radio (no 850MHz, apparently) atop a 200MHz OMAP750.

How-To: Make a solid-state A/V switcher

Ben’s Solid State A/V Switcher. Comes in any color you’d like as long as it’s black.

As you probably recall we recently had several articles on the Wii laptop which, of course, has Virtual Console game emulation. But what about people who’d prefer to have, say, every system they own hooked up all at once to one TV? Or a full-featured standalone DVD player and an Xbox 360, both using component video? This can become problematic input-wise, but not if you have a solid state A/V switcher!

While “solid state” may bring bring to mind electronics from the 60s (or, in some cases, yet-unreleased flash hard drives), but in this case it simply means the actual switching is done with circuitry, not mechanically. Ironically, the circuits are activated with a mechanical switch, but they could be controlled electronically if you were so inclined.

In this How-To we’ll show you how to wire up your own A/V switcher which you can expand and use any way you’d like, for composite, S-Sideo, component, even VGA signals. Sure, you can buy a newer, really expensive TV’s with multiple inputs (even component), but for those of us whose credit cards aren’t quite up to that challenge, more inputs for less cash would be rather desirable. Let’s get started!

TrekStor’s DataStation maxi t.uch drive does it all

March 13th, 2007 · No Comments

As if you needed any more card readers and USB hubs in your life, TrekStor is busting out this new DataStation maxi t.uch hard drive at CeBIT this week, with a 9-in-1 card reader and a pair of USB ports in tow. The drive comes in 250GB and 400GB versions, and is capable of automatically backing up its own data. This should provide a nice bit of convenience for photogs looking for a quick and convenient way to offload pics from flash memory cards, and the powered USB ports are always nice, but neither addition is earth shattering. You’ll be able to pick up a a drive soon, with the 250 gigger going for €120 ($158 US) and the 400 gig at €175 ($230 US).
